Hi, I am Dr. Nwogu. I am from Nigeria. Recently I had my Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy in India. In late May 2010 I went for my annual medical check-up. The blood test results showed that my prostate specific antigen(PSA) level had risen from 2.5 fifteen months earlier to 5.1. This concerned my doctor sufficiently that she had me get an ultrasound and a biopsy. The biopsy result were positive. The Gleason rating was 5 on the right side and 2 on the left side of the prostate. This was quite a shock to me. Even though I knew that most men are eventually confronted with this problem, it was hard to accept that it was happening to ME! At diagnosis, my doctor said I had four options: Do nothing, External radiation, Radioactive seed implants or Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy. The doctor being a very dear friend of mine requested me that if possible to go for Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy in India as this treatment being a recent techniques is not available in Nigeria and the surgery has immense advantages over any other type of Prostate cancer surgery. Minimally invasive radical prostatectomy in India is performed under anesthesia by experienced surgeons and the procedure takes from 1.5 to 4 hours to complete. The patient is either unconscious during the prostatectomy or remains awake but numb below the waist. In the most common Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy procedure, the incision begins below the navel and extends to just above the pubic bone. In a variation of this procedure,a smaller, curved incision is made between the anus and the base of the scrotum; the prostate is then removed from underneath the pubic bone. A nerve sparing Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy may be employed in an attempt to preserve the man’s erectile function. After removal of the prostate, the urethra is sewn to the neck of the bladder over a urinary catheter. The catheter is a narrow tube that is passed through the urethra into the bladder. Drains are placed around the site and then the incision is closed. After Minimally Invasive Radical Prostatectomy, I was taken to the recovery room. The catheter was removed after the procedure, and dressings are kept on the wounds until they have completely dried up.
